As far as I know it's an HVAC component, nothing to do with the engine. I've also heard of a part known as the "blend door actuator" failing consistently, but I don't really remember what that does. Other issues they're known to have are the plastic thermostat housings failing, there's a guy (I want to say his name is Todd Zabia, but I can't remember if it's him or not) who's well known in the Explorer community who makes and sells an aluminum replacement. They say it was fixed on the later model engines (2004 and up, I've heard), but I've heard a few people contest that. If I had to guess, this is the "death rattle" the other fella is referencing. On most vehicles this isn't a monumental task, but in the Explorers it is because it requires the engine being removed from the engine bay in order to access the guides on the back of the engine. The main issue they're known for is the plastic timing chain guides wearing out, which if not properly taken care of has the potential to grenade your engine. Closer to 205/210 HP, and a bit different gearing so it gets out of it's way far better than the OHV. The "newer" SOHC engines they made from I want to say '95 or so up until 2010 I know a little bit more about. Pretty sure it has a misfire, likely due to the valve cover gasket leaking oil over the spark plugs, but like I said, despite all these problems it's yet to catastrophically fail me or leave me stranded. The only thing it needed to run was a new battery and I've never had an issue starting it since. I bought it a couple months ago after it had been sitting for 6 months to a year and I've put a bit over 1000 miles on it since without doing any maintenance whatsoever. It needs new suspension bushings and some quality of life improvements but otherwise it's perfectly fine, I swear.

Oil out the driver side valve cover, water through the sunroof (and possibly the windshield) and gas from the gas cap, to name what I'm immediately aware of. Like I said, mine is perfectly functional, it just leaks virtually everything everywhere. In all honesty, from what I've heard the first gens with the OHV have effectively bulletproof engines, they're just absolutely gutless (160 HP, mine probably makes half that). I won t buy another Ford despite the fact I have 3 in my driveway now.īearings Bearings Bearings, Rear end has been serviced seven times all due to the CHEAP bearings that FORD uses and then refuses to stand behind their parts.I have a '94 4.0 OHV and an '05 4.0 SOHC Sport Trac and all I can really say is. It was a great SUV to drive, but it cost me over $9k in maint/repairs in the last 3 years I owned this SUV.Ībsolutely TERRIBLE transmission problems that Ford refuses to address. Ford knew there were problems w/ the tranny, but decided to stick it to the owners anyways.

Internet research confirmed lots of owners were having similar problems: total brake jobs every 25k miles, front (50k) and real wheel bearings (67k), rear door trim bezel cracked 3x (fixed 1st time under warranty, I paid 2nd time, left as-is 3rd time), and the real killer - a complete tranny overhaul at only 67k miles. I've driven Fords all my life, and this was by far the worst I've ever owned. The SUV became a money pit in my 6th year of ownership. I haven't bothered getting this stuff fixed yet. Got annoying wind noise coming from somewhere around the a-pillars, and the mirrors have had water in the signals since new. I've had issues with the MyFord Touch system (fixed by latest update). I expect that this vehicle will be kept at least 2 or 3 more years.įord Explorer Reliability And Durability: Cons We had some tranny adjustment issues that were resolved right away, and in the last 6 months it has run very well for us. With our new tranny we got a 3 year- 100k warranty.

We reasoned it was worth it to put a new re-man tranny in because the cost of a new tow vehicle was going to run in the 20k plus range for anything that we felt compared to our vehicle, and that would be a used vehicle with approximately the same mileage our current vehicle has. No problems with motor or rear end so far. The SUV has only 97000 miles on it and is otherwise in very good shape.

It has performed well over the years with only a few problems, but this last year we had to replace the transmission in it which cost about $3000. It was purchased primarily as a tow vehicle for our 24 foot travel trailer. We bought this vehicle in 2005 with 37000 miles on it. I have had good experience with this car. It is built on a solid frame that will take a lot of abuse. The expected life span of the vehicle is longer than most cars. Ford Explorer Reliability And Durability: Pros
